About
Corsica, also known as “The Elysée of Geology”, provides an unrivaled geological experience, with fantastic records of deep-seated processes affecting the Earth's crust and stunning landscapes.
A mountain in the heart of the Mediterranean
The island of beauty is a real mountain in the sea, which, thanks to tectonic events, has separated itself with its big sister Sardinia, from the southern part of the European continent.

- Geoparadise:Gorges de Spelunca

- Coastline: 1000 km
As a quick look at the geological map immediately reveals, Corsica is largely twofold.
The eastern part of this ~100 km-long section runs across what is known as Alpine Corsica, which formed over the last 100 Ma, while the western part belongs to a much more ancient history, when the large-scale Variscan orogeny affected, from ~350 to 280 Ma, much of what is Europe today.Facts
The island is located between the west coast of Italy and the north coast of Sardinia (an Italian island) yet it is French. Corsica was, in fact, sold to France, which lies to the island’s north-west, in 1768. In 1769, a year later, Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio (Ajax), one of Corsica’s main towns. He was born into a wealthy family and at the age of nine he was packed off to military school near Troyes in northern France. The other three main settlements on the island are Corte, Bastia and Sartene. Corsica is generally referred to as one of 26 French regions but in law it is actually a territorial collectivity, which means it has slightly more far-reaching powers than other French regions. The island is divided into two departments: Corse-du-Sud and Haute-Corse.

Geology
We are taking you here on an east-to-west traverse across the northern part of the island, across the Cap Corse, the bay of Saint-Florent, the Tenda massif and Ile Rousse, from Bastia to Porto Ota.
Our 7-day excursion will take you through both domains. Movies for days #1, 2 and 3 emphasize the making up of Alpine Corsica.
This trip will take you through subduction, slow-spreading oceans, deep-sea sediments and melting processes.
